Link: Sentencing Law and Policy.
Religious involvement in corrections dates back to Victorian prisoners, since the 1850s by the major Christian denominations. More recently (1990s), religious advisers representing Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish, Orthodox and Uniting beliefs have also provided services. The provision of these services enables prisoners to maintain contact with their families and the community, provides a link between prisoners and their faith community, support in times of crisis, liaison with other support services and support to prison staff.
